Throughout history humans have always had a leader, someone who will impose rules and protect their people. They need to posses some specific qualities in order to be effective and efficient with the people they are leading. In William Golding’s novel “Lord of the flies” some of these qualities are used by many of the characters he creates. Leadership roles in lord of the flies are demonstrated through little boys trying to survive in a deserted island, imposing their own rules imposed by leaders they had chosen because they needed to feel some kind of security in order for them to survive. Ralph is worried about what needs to be done in order for them to survive, and comes up with ideas of building shelters, lighting a fire, getting food, this is probably to make himself look bigger and tougher to other boys that don’t like the idea of him being a leader. He creates rules that must be followed to achieve order. Ralph keeps the boys in order through meetings he holds in which only the person holding the conch could speak, however anyone could hold it, “I will give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he is speaking.” (Golding 36) Ralph says this to show his role as a leader and gives the boys stability. Ralph’s method of leadership is based on possession of the conch, showing others a sigh of freedom while holding it. Ralph had many things to learn at the begging of the novel, and almost to the end, it seemed to pay off. And Ralph’s group would have been the best to join.
Jack is definitely the most successful leader on the island; he has many of the qualities, if not all, that would lead a rebellion. He likes to tell people what to do, have them follow him and have everyone do as he says, for example when his tribe killed Simon” kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!”(Golding 172). He tells the other kids what to do and it must be done as he says. At the end of the novel Jack takes control of the boys
